Just got the new Nintendo Switch? Here’s 5 can’t miss games to play right now.

The Nintendo Switch is the latest breakout success from Nintendo. After seeing tremendous success with the Wii, Nintendo’s failed Wii U eroded much of the goodwill they had accumulated with the Wii. Well the Switch has changed all that and is a return to greatness for the last surviving member of the 8-bit era. In case you are new to the Switch party, here are the games you need to play ASAP.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is an obvious addition to anyone’s Switch library but that doesn’t make it any less amazing. BOTW’s stunning graphics and immersive deep gameplay will keep you hooked hour after hour after hour. Seriously you may not need another game for quite a while.

G-Tip: Zelda has a “Pro Mode” option which turns off most HUD elements and leaves you with mainly only your heart counter. Do it. You’ll thank me.

2) Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Smash Bros has been a highlight in Nintendo’s lineup for several generations, and the latest every might be the best yet. With more than 70 characters, and tons of stages, Smash will fuel many endless nights of gaming competition.

G-Tip: Make sure to explore the custom Mii Fighters for customizable fun and excitement. Mine? A badass hand-to-hand fighting cowboy.

3) Super Mario Maker 2

While there are many quality options to get your Mario fix on the Switch, none offer the variety and replayability of Mario Maker. You can play the campaign developed by Nintendo, create your own levels, OR play the hundreds upon hundreds of levels created by other gamers. Levels can range from crazy easy to insanely hard but if you are looking for a different take on classic Mario action, look no further.

G-Tip: Make sure to Google the best levels to try. There are a lot of communities dedicated to making the most out of Mario Maker.

4) Dead Cells

As the only non-Nintendo game on this list, you might think Dead Cells is extra special, and you would be right. Utilizing beautifully crafted pixel art environments, and difficult but rewarding gameplay Dead Cells is a modern classic. Just be prepared to die a lot, as Dead Cells roguelike gameplay means you’ll be unlocking abilities but dying frequently. Just know that going in, and you’ll have a great time.

G-Tip: Make sure to pay attention to the path choices in every level. Almost every level has at least two exits and one is almost always harder than the other.

5) Nintendo Online

Now you might be thinking “…but Nintendo Online isn’t a game?!?” And you’d be right. But it does provide you access to Nintendo’s classic NES library.

Nintendo’s NES library includes more than 30 games and game variants, but the best of the bunch are timeless classics, including:

  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario Kart
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Super Metroid
  • Stunt Race FX
  • Kirby’s Dream Land 3
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
  • Star Fox
  • F-Zero
  • Pilotwings
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • Brawl Brothers
  • Breath of Fire
  • Demon’s Crest
  • Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics
  • Super E.D.F. Earth Defense Force
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Puyo Puyo 2 (available for the first time in the U.S.)
  • Super Soccer
  • Super Tennis

G-Tip: In terms of Free 2 Play, the Switch isn’t the garbage dump of games that iOS and Android are, and that’s a good thing, but you do need Nintendo Online to play most online games. A few excellent F2P games on the Switch include Tetris 99, Arena of Valor and Pokemon Quest.
