Mario Kart Tour: The Review

Verdict: 😏 FUN – Not the best but still enjoyable. Worth playing at least once. In the context of the playability of mobile games, Mario Kart is fun enough to keep playing. How long? Tough to tell. But for a free mobile game you’ll certainly get more than your money’s worth.

Mario Kart now on iOS

OS/Device reviewed: iOS 13.1.2 / iPhone 8 Plus

Three reasons to play:

  1. It’s Mario Kart and could be Nintendo’s best mobile game yet!
  2. Graphics and sound are exactly what you’d hope for, and tracks are based off of previous games in the series.
  3. Easy to pick up and play.

One reason not to: Well, it’s still a free to play mobile game, with all the pay barriers, micro transactions and annoyances that come with it. Plus, the highest speed tier (200 cc) is only accessible with a $4.99 per month subscription. WTF Nintendo?!?

Concept: It’s Mario Kart on mobile. Easy to pick up and play in bite size pieces.

Graphics: Colorful, well-rendered graphics, visually on par with recent Nintendo releases. No problems here.

Sound: Exactly what you would expect from Mario Kart. No better and no worse.

Playability: Definitely easy to pick up and play. Swipe controls take getting used to. Not as good as some other mobile racers but not as bad as others.

Entertainment: Mario Kart is fun. While it’s unclear how long the fun will last, it’s certainly more entertaining than most of Nintendo’s mobile games so far.

Replay: In the context of the playability of mobile games, Mario Kart is fun enough to keep playing. How long? Tough to tell. But for a free mobile game you’ll certainly get more than your money’s worth.

Colorful and fun. What else would you expect from Mario Kart?

Reviews of Mario Kart Tour have been largely negative. The biggest gripe being the monetization and subscription aspects of the game. While that is annoying, the recent Sonic racing game for Apple Arcade is not nearly as playable or fun as Mario Kart, so while Sonic may not have the same micro transactions, at least Mario Kart is fun. In the end that’s what really matters right?

While Mario Kart is only single player at the moment, there is a grayed-out option in the menu for multiplayer that says coming soon.

👏👏👏 can’t wait
