First released in 1993, Samurai Showdown was one of the first widely loved games for the NeoGeo home arcade system.
Despite the NeoGeo’s legendary gaming prowess at the time, fighting games like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat dominated the popular gaming landscape, much like battle royale games like Fortnite and PUBG do today. While the NeoGeo had several arcade quality games in its lineup, it didn’t have a game like Street Fighter 2… until Samurai Showdown.
The NeoGeo had some very impressive games, but none that could rival the dominance of Street Fighter 2, but that changed with Samurai Showdown.
Even though Street Fighter continued to be very popular, Samurai Showdown quickly became an interesting, cool alternative. The anime-style graphics, inclusion of weapons and blood, and finishing moves created an interesting hybrid between Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, that spawned several sequels over the years.
Now those games are coming to modern consoles with the Samurai Showdown: NeoGeo Collection.
