About Gamatroid

Hi. I’m Gamatroid. I’m an 80s kid whose been a gamer most of his life. I started out with the Atari 2600 & 5200 (I had the 2600 adapter for the 5200), then my dad got a Sega Master System (which I regret not appreciating more at the time), and then I got the NES Power Set for Christmas in 1988 (complete with Power Pad and the amazing three-in-one pack in cart with Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet).

By 1989 I was a full on gamer, and I vividly remember the hype leading up to the release of Super Mario Bros 3, including the movie The Wizard where Mario 3 was debuted. I played a ton of NES and I anxiously poured over the content in video game magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), leading up to the launch of the Super Nintendo, and more importantly, the launch of Super Mario World.

Eventually I also got a Sega Genesis and I loved Sega’s exclusive classics such as Sonic, Toejam & Earl, Streets of Rage, and Road Rash. I also really enjoyed Sega’s excellent marketing and the console wars of the 90s. Sega had some of the best commercials, and even though I knew the SNES was superior, I still enjoyed seeing Sega give Nintendo a run for their money.

Today I game across multiple consoles and devices, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, iPhone and PC, and I probably have more games in my backlog than I’ll ever have time to play.

I’ve followed gaming trends and news for as long as I can remember, even through periods of my life where I wasn’t regularly playing, and I’ve seen practically every major console war, leading companies come and go, and many vapor-ware promises never materialize.

I started Gamatroid.com because I wanted to share my gaming experiences and perspectives, and celebrate my love of gaming with others.

Retro Game Club Podcast

This has quickly become my favorite retro gaming podcast. Each episode Rob and Hughes discuss developments in the retro gaming world (which other podcasts don’t cover), plus they talk about their experience playing the two game club games selected for that episode. The production is good quality and their banter always sounds genuine. You should definitely give it a listen, and if you have a chance you should try to play along with their game club picks then email them your experience with them. They love getting listener email.

GamaGear Inspiration

So why did I create GamaGear? Well, I love traditional gamer apparel as much as the next nerd, but sometimes it was just too obvious for my taste, like with the game’s logo and characters and stuff all over the place. I wanted to try and create something that can sometimes still be recognizable as gaming-related, and gamers would likely recognize the reference after a few seconds, but casuals wouldn’t get it.

Case in point:

The shirt itself simply reads, “What a horrible night to have a curse.” To a casual observer, they might have an idea that it’s video game related, due to the pixelated font, but only gamers would know that it looks almost exactly like the pop-up window that appears in Simon’s Quest. I even tried to copy the exact spacing as much as Zazzle’s editor would let me.

I like the idea of wearing apparel made for gamers, that may not be immediately recognizable as “gamer apparel”.

Hopefully you’ll like it too.
